Vocational rehabilitation process

If you have a visual disability and want to get or keep a job, vocational rehabilitation can help. Learn how to apply for and participate in this program.

The Vocational Rehabilitation process for adult VR clients and students aged 14 and up generally follows a four-step process:

Apply for the program

Call us at 800-552-7103 to apply for vocational rehabilitation services. You will speak with a staff member who can help complete your application. They will also schedule a meeting with one of our counselors.

Meet with a counselor

Next, you will meet with a counselor to discuss your interests and career goals. Your initial meeting with your DSB Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) will focus on learning about your interests and career goals, gathering information, and completing your application for services. They will also ask for personal information to see if you qualify for vocational rehabilitation. Be ready to answer questions about your:

  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Criminal history
  • Limitations due to disabilities
  • Education
  • Veteran status
  • Income
  • Medical insurance
  • Current and past jobs

What to bring to your first meeting

  • Driver's license, ID card, or passport
  • Copy of your Social Security card or birth certificate
  • Contact information for your eye care professional

Find out if you are eligible

After your first meeting, we will determine if you are eligible based on the information you gave your counselor. Learn more about eligibility for vocational rehabilitation services.

If you are eligible for the program, your counselor will contact you to schedule your next meeting. They may also refer you to specialists who can assess what types of training and accommodations you might need.

 

Make a plan

Your counselor will help you create a plan to reach your career goals. Your plan may include:

  • Attending job counseling
  • Participating in training
  • Getting equipment to help with your job
  • Determining when you are ready to work
