Career Counseling
Our VR team is here to help you figure out what kind of career you want and the skills and abilities you’ll need to achieve it. Our Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors (VRCs) work with our customers to develop the skills needed to find great jobs and advance their careers.
Career counseling may include assessments to determine your work strengths and opportunities to grow – from technology use to activities of daily living – and then working with you to create a training plan to reach all the milestones on the way to your career goal.
We offer training to develop effective communication and problem-solving skills; adaptive skills of blindness, including instruction in orientation and mobility and assistive technology equipment use; job-seeking skills; effective workplace communication and an understanding of employer expectations. Training may also include support for higher education if it is needed for a career path.
VRCs help our customers become work ready and gain the requirements necessary to move into the career of their choice, including:
- Completion of any required certifications or licenses.
- Determination of accommodations needed on the job.
- Development of resumes and cover letters and ensuring you have all the identification documents employers require.
- Job-seeking skills for the current job market.
Throughout your plan, our VRCs work closely with you to ensure you have what you need to take the next steps toward your goals. This includes ensuring that you have the support and training needed to begin your job search. You take the lead on your job search activities. This is your journey, but DSB is here to be your tour guide.
