Event description
Students will connect with other students to organize community-provided donations and prepare them for delivery to a local charity in need.
This is a youth-friendly workshop to develop work readiness skills, such as financial management, teamwork, and problem solving. Students will also explore jobs and learn about working at charities and community organizations.
This is a great opportunity for students to give back this holiday season and to gain valuable volunteer work experience that they can put on their resumes. Students will gain:
- Job exploration counseling by discussing and exploring employment and learning about careers from speakers.
- Work-based learning through workplace tours and volunteering.
- Experience in self-advocacy by working on setting goals, evaluating options, requesting and using accommodations and low vision and accessibility tools, listening to others, and monitoring progress.
They will also have the chance to practice workplace readiness by working on orientation and mobility in a work environment; building social and interpersonal skills through teamwork, cooperation, conflict resolution, decision making, empathy, and respectfulness; and exercise their independent living skills by practicing community participation, safety, transportation, appropriate behavior, and developing friendships and connections.
- Giving Back: Working in Non-profits – Saturday, January 18. We will meet at the Tacoma Rescue Mission Donation Center to learn about their services and volunteer. We will end the afternoon at the main Tacoma Rescue Mission facility to participate in some group activities and learn about The Mission’s services and jobs.
Please join us for this a great activity to give back to our community and explore valuable job experiences. The event is free to registered students ages 14-21. Lunch is provided.
