Event description

A contemporary kitchen countertop. There are containers of spices, pasta, and utensils on the counter as well as a microwave. 2 pots are on the stove.

Too often, students who are Blind or Low Vision are excluded from opportunities to flourish in the kitchen through a lack of opportunity as well as through their own disbelief that they can succeed in safely creating tasty treats. Also, a lack of experience and understanding by families, educators, and community organizations of how to instruct and support students succeeding in the kitchen have led historically to students who are Blind or Low Vision being left out of these culinary experiences.

We have listened to students, families, educators and our community partners and we are excited to present the first of many workshops that will build skills, confidence, and know-how for all who are eager to get in the kitchen and showcase their talents.

This workshop will guide attendees through:

  • Kitchen safety instruction for Blind and Low Vision Students
  • Accessible cooking strategies and tools for students to use in their home and in school
  • Best practices, strategies and tools for families, educators, and community organizations to use when supporting Blind and Low Vision students in the kitchen
  • Attendees working independently or together to create tasty treats to enjoy
