Event description

Design by Jonny Mitford. It features two blue grey Sandhill cranes walking side by side. The cranes have red heads. The crane in the background has an all white cane with a metal tip. The crane in the foreground has a white cane with a red tip and roller marshmallow. Along the back of the back crane is written "White Cane Day" and blow their feet is "2024".

White Cane Day is just around the corner, and we are delighted to once again partner with the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library (WTBBL) to spread awareness of the white cane - an invaluable tool of independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.

White Cane Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

The event will begin with a walk from the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library to Westlake Park, where we will have speakers. At 1:30, we will walk back to WTBBL where there will be refreshments and vendors, such as the National Federation of the Blind, Washington Council of the Blind, the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes, Sound Transit and more!

In addition, "You Cane Give" is sponsoring a cane drive for this event. Wondering what to do with that old cane you no longer use? Is that drawer of used canes collecting dust and taking up space? Donate your old canes to the “You Cane Give” program. And turn that old cane into newfound independence for individuals in need. Questions? Ideas! Contact Alice Klein
