Department of Services for the Blind's (DSB) Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) Goalball Leadership Summit (GLS) brings youth to the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) campus in October of 2024 for a 3-day residential program which teaches the core foundations of leadership, advocacy, and teamwork through the sport of Goalball!
Students will learn leadership skills they can take with them on and off the court through participating in sports clinics, scrimmages, and mentoring activities led by coaches and leaders from the sport. The program starts Friday afternoon with team and leadership building activities. A focus on leadership building through game play and mentoring continues as teams play in the Jr. Cascade Classic Goalball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Students do not need previous goalball experience to attend.
A detailed schedule and list of activities will be provided before the event.
This event is open to any student who is Blind, Deaf-Blind or Low Vision between the ages of 14-21 and receiving services through DSB VR or Pre-ETS. Students who are not receiving services through DSB VR or Pre-ETS and would like to take part in this event, should email Maryam Wolff or call 360-999-3138 to learn more about VR.
Minors who are not current WSSB students will need a parent/guardian for chaperoning to attend the event and stay at the hotel.
Current Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) students will stay in staffed residential dorms for the duration of the program.
Students who are not current WSSB students but are receiving services through DSB Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) or Pre-ETS will stay in the Hampton Inn Portland Vancouver paid for by the DSB. Students may check-in to the hotel on Thursday evening before the event begins Friday. Minors will need to attend the weekend with a parent/guardian for chaperoning at the hotel. Transportation will be provided to and from the hotel via hotel shuttle. Hotel details will be provided to registered participants.
Students can be dropped off anytime between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, October 18. The summit ends Sunday, October 20 and students can be picked up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Residential students at WSSB will be dismissed to residential staff when the tournament has concluded.
