YS Baking Up a Business

The display case at Indulge Desserts. there are several platters of cupcakes on the bottom shelf on the bottom shelf. The top shelf has pastries decorated to look like candy corn and other Halloween themed items.Everyone loves baking cookies, cakes, pies, and other pastries for friends and family. But what does it take to turn that past-time into a business?

Measuring, mixing, pouring, and baking are just a part of a baker’s life. Join us as we go on a tour of a small business bakery in West Seattle. Michelle Auld, the owner and chief baker at Indulge Desserts, invites us to come for a tour of her bakery (and learn to decorate cookies) as well as share what other kinds of work are needed to operate a successful bakery.

Students also get the opportunity to practice customer service techniques by interacting with pretend “customers” who come in to buy the goods sold there.
